Gamescom 2014, Day 4: Project Cars Bought IGN! Mario Maker Is Mario, Super Smash Bros Looks Awesome And This Just In: Evolve Still Looks Awesome. Plus More Stuff!

Written By: Tyler

Hello peoples, and welcome to another day of Gamescom 2014 and my coverage... which consists of me watching IGN streams. I'm truly a hero.

This post consists entirely on my impressions of the streams I watched for various games, and it seemed to be pretty Nintendo focused today. Unfortunately, Gamescom is coming to an end, but never fear because tomorrow I will be putting up my Gamescom Awards post where I give meaningless -- in the grand scheme of things but dammit they're important to me -- awards to developers and games that will probably never see it anyway. Let's get into this.

Project Cars -- Project Cars is a sandbox motorsports racing game coming this fall.

The demo showcased the driving, obviously, and it looked pretty. Unless I played it I couldn't really comment on how it feels, and that's pretty important in something like racing. I'm probably one of the worst people to cover racing games though because unless it's Kart racing or something like Blur that has Kart elements, I probably won't play it.

The IGN stream restarted so I didn't get to see a lot of it. Then I watched the beginning of it a second time and it restarted... again. And again. And once more for good measure. Oh wait we aren't done yet, let's repeat again. What just happened? That's right, another repeat. Oh hai Project Cars... another repeat. I'm just going to stop writing something every time it repeats because this is ridiculous. I feel like I'm in Groundhog Day. Way to go IGN.

The worst part is, Daemon Hatfield has to keep reliving his screw-up on pronouncing Germany at the beginning, over and over again, so nobody will ever forget.

Then after they finally realized that we were onto them, they took down the stream and this was the last thing we ever saw:

IGN: Brought to you by Project Cars.

IGN decided to finally show the stream, so while it wasn't live anymore, I could still watch the games in action.

Evolve -- A lot has already been said about Evolve. It's got incredible looking and exciting multiplayer, and I think it's a game that will do very well for itself. The 4 vs 1, hunter vs hunted, multiplayer where the environment is also dangerous, will be a lot of fun.

I just wonder how much replay value it will actually have. I thought that the game was going to have a single-player campaign to beef it up, but it turns out that you can do the same thing offline but with AI. I don't see myself playing this mode over and over again for hours upon hours, so unless I'm missing something I think it'll be a lot of fun for a short period of time.

Ori And The Blind Forest -- In the demo for Ori, they showed off one of the abilities: bash. Basically it allows you to slingshot yourself in any direction you want and it seems to be an important mechanic in the game. Because the person playing helped design the game, he's really good at it so it's interesting to see what a pro can do once they've mastered bash.

And my Lord, Ori is a beautiful game. The environments are detailed and colourful, though the level in this particular demo has a darker atmosphere. However, that doesn't stop it from having purples, greens and blues in certain areas to lighten it up. I love the visual style in this.

It also has light RPG elements in the sense that it has a skill tree. You are able to get all the abilities in the game in one playthrough if you explore and collect all the ability points.

The end of the demo is Ori escaping from the dungeon as water gushes up. This is something used a lot in games but it was pretty terrifying to watch.

Ori should be a special game.

Splatoon -- I pre-ordered this because I generally support Wii U exclusives, and I thought the multiplayer looked interesting. My fear going in is the same as Evolve, where I don't know if there will be a lot of replay value... because if you're just playing the same one or two modes over and over it'll get boring. Apparently there will be some sort of single-player mode but they didn't really talk about it.

If you are unaware, it's a third-person multiplayer game where you have to spray the ground with your ink. It sounds silly but looks prett fun and original.

The game uses the Gamepad as a map and a way to "super jump" to your team mates. You can tap on their image and you will instantly go to them.

I really like the concept so I hope it grows into something great that offers hours of value, because as far as I know it is a full-priced game.

Bayonetta -- Next we got to see Bayonetta. No, not the second one... the version of the first that ships with Bayonetta 2.

It has Nintendo elements to it, such as a hand cannon and the Master Sword. This demo has her dressed up like Samus, Link and Peach for a while.

I dig Bayonetta and I have since it originally came out. I love its brand of third-person, insane action.  Bayonetta 2 is a no-brainer purchase for me, especially since you got two games for the price of one.

Mario Maker -- Here is a game that I'm really excited for, and I'm sure a lot of other people are too. The idea of being able to create a Mario level is an awesome one that should have been done before.

The creation tool is very inspired by Mario Paint, which just adds to it because Mario Paint was the shit. It makes me wonder why we haven't gotten a new Mario Paint, since the last one was on SNES.

In the demo we got to see some of the ways that the interface works, and it's very easy to do stuff so you won't get bogged down in useless crap. It's as easy as simply selecting things with the stylus and placing them, or shaking it to make Mario become Super Mario. Thelook of the game can change. The demo has two graphic styles; the classic style and the New Super Mario Bros. style. That's a nice touch I reckon.

My main concern is level sharing and it infuriates me that they still refuse to comment on it. This is an extremely important aspect of the game and it should be announced. It will literally be the difference between cancelling my pre-order (though now they aren't sure if its retail or digital only) or keeping it, because if you can't share it online with people and download the levels made by strangers across the world then it's not worth buying. And yes, I go on record saying that, because it doesn't matter how great the creation tool is, if you can only play it yourself or with your friends then it defeats the purpose.

Kirby And The Rainbow Curse -- Geez, more Nintendo, not that I'm complaining. Here we have a new Kirby for Wii U.

You use a temporary rainbow line to traverse the levels while collecting the stars. What this means is that you will spend a lot of time using the gamepad and drawing lines, which is great in a way because it's going to give the gamepad more of a purpose... but I don't think I'm terribly interested in a game build almost entirely around doing that.

Mario Party 10 -- I haven't played a Mario Party in years. I can't even remember the last one I played, so it's interesting for me to see where it's at now.

The demo started with a battle with Bowser, and the player was controlling Bowser and shooting fireballs at the other players. Then it showed a mini-game where the player controlling Bowser had to tilt the gamepad to move the world and hit the other players with the rows of fireballs. We got to see a bunch of mini-games where one person controlled Bowser. It's an interesting mechanic, and it plays into the recent trend of new games in development that do this "4 vs 1" multiplayer.

Super Smash Bros Wii U -- When you play a Smash Bros you basically know what you're going to get. They can tweak and change things, but the core gameplay is fundamentally the same. That's fine because they don't milk the series at all.

I actually don't bother watching Smash Bros videos most of the time because I know what I'm going to get, so outside of learning what characters are in it... it doesn't really matter. They got my money and I know I'm going to love the game.

They talked a little bit about Mega Man, showed off a new stage that's more open than other ones, and showcased the insanity that is Smash Bros.

You can also unlock different sets of special attacks in a variety of different ways.

Gamescom 2014, Day 3 -- Hellraid, Dead Island 2 Has No Story, Shadow Realms Is Less Nerdy Than D&D And Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Has A Badass Claptrap

Written By: Tyler

Hello again people, and I hope you're enjoying Gamescom. I was occupied with a bunch of stuff today so I didn't get to stream every demo shown on IGN like I did yesterday, but I have a little bit before bed so I wanted to take a moment to give my impressions on a few of the demos shown today. I only picked the ones I was interested in, or games I never heard of. Tomorrow I will have a more complete article.

Hellraid -- Hellraid is a first-person hack n' slash game. First-person melee combat has a habit of not being that fluid, so I hope Hellraid can get it right. It'll have light RPG elements and is "somewhere in between RPG and action." It was described as Dead Island meets Elder Scrolls and I think that seems like a decent comparison.

It has three gameplay modes; mission mode, story mode and arena. Story mode is obvious, and with mission mode you basically just do missions and get points. Arena mode is just basically survival. You can play all three modes in single-player or co-op.

I don't really think Hellraid will be much, but it'll probably be okay. Since there apparently isn't a lot of RPG in this and exploration is there but not on the scale of an Elder Scrolls game, it's pretty dependent on the combat and I don't think, from this demo (and yes I know it's early), that Hellraid will deliver an exciting experience.

Dead Island 2 -- Dead Island 2 takes place in California and promises 8 player co-op gameplay. I'm going to be honest: as long as it gives me a similar experience to the first Dead Island, minus the bugs and glitches, I'm in. I am all for playing an open-world zombie game with someone.

It doesn't appear to change the formula much, but it is evolving it a little bit. Now you can do things like light the grass on fire, Far Cry style, or dual wield weapons.

Oh wait, supposedly you can't really beat the game, because it keeps going and you keep getting missions. So... there isn't a story? I don't know about this. Even though Dead Island had a stupid story, it was still something driving the game forward and this worries me. I think Dying Light will shit all over this.

Shadow Realms -- I was a little confused about this RPG. It's a more modern Fantasy Bioware game but they seem to be doing something a little different this time around.

The core gameplay is 4 vs 1 where the other players where one player is basically a Dungeon Master (Shadowlord in this game) and can take control of everything while you and your friends team-up and try to beat the missions.

It has elements of Bioware with the conversations and whatnot, but they're putting a spin on their own formula. It could be good but I don't know. I have faith in Bioware, but I'll have to wait and see when it comes to this game.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel -- In this demo we got to see Claptrap. I love that little bastard, so I'm down.

It starts with them putting points into his skill tree. I enjoy that he has a highfive skill where if you return it  you'll get buffs but if you don't only he does.

Aside from that, this is Borderlands and I'm okay with that. I would have preferred Borderlands 3 on more powerful hardware rather than this spin-off on last-gen (and PC), but they are doing a few new things with it so I'm up for another Borderlands adventure. They're fun with a friend.

Weekly News Round-Up, March 9 - 15: The Witcher 3 Delay Kills Millions

Written By: Tyler

When I write these round-ups, I edit the article at least once a day since it's an on-going thing throughout the week. With that said, let's see if we can get through the week without mentioning TITANFALL, outside of that once.

Since The Wire officially had its last episode on March 9 of 2008, and many people were mourning for at least a week six years ago because of that... expect to see a lot of gifs in honor of the greatest show of all time.

This week's Weekly News Round-Up Is Sponsored By:

No, not really... but of they want to back up the Metal Gear truck to my house and unload a whole bunch of merchandise I will be theirs forever and do anything they want -- up to and including killing a man. I can be bought. Get this game on March 17.

I hope you enjoy this week, and tell me what you think in the comments below or follow me on Twitter @ArtBathednCrime and yell at me there.

SHOTS FIRED!!! Microsoft Takes Aim At Sony Concerning "Games With Gold"
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-s-phil-spencer-says-games-with-gold-is-fundamentally-different-than-playstation-plus/1100-6418195/

Phil Spencer says that "Games With Gold" is different because you get to keep the games even if you don't renew your subscription., which admittedly is a bonus. But I would imagine a lot of Playstation users will always have Playstation Plus because you need it to play most online games, so the rental-type service isn't really that bad.

But I'm jealous because in the past "Games With Gold" has offered games such as Halo 3... a game that pretty much every Xbox owner must have had anyway.

Newegg Is Offering The Xbone With A Free Game
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-comes-with-free-game-on-newegg/1100-6418194/

If you buy an Xbone from online retailer Newegg for 500 dolla dolla billz, you get a free game! You can choose between Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 (makes a good beverage coaster), Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Need For Speed: Rivals, NBA 2K14 and... Just Dance 2014.

Or, by the time you read this, you can get the TITANFALL bundle.

I Am Sorry, For I Have Failed

I mentioned TITANFALL again.

Bobby Kotick Receives A Measly 7.85 Million Dollar Bonus
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/activision-blizzard-ceo-bobby-kotick-receives-7-85-million-bonus/1100-6418250/

This news makes me so sad. The Blizzard CEO only got a 7.85 million dollar bonus due to his performance in 2013. As we all know, Blizzard basically pumps crack into the streets in the form of WoW, Starcraft and Diablo, so he should be commended for his drug dealing skills.

EA States That When You Push Innovation You Miss Other Things

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-on-battlefield-4-simcity-issues-when-you-push-innovation-you-miss-other-things/1100-6418234/

Yeah, like functional games. Releasing sequels that may slightly improve on the games prior isn't innovation either. Shut up EA.

EA Cuts Jobs At Plants vs Zombies Studio
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-cuts-jobs-at-plants-vs-zombies-studio/1100-6418302/

Apparently 40 people lost their jobs. Always sad to see layoffs.

Ubisoft Has A Bunch Of Games Planned
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ubisoft-has-assassin-s-creed-splinter-cell-and-three-more-unannounced-games-in-the-works/1100-6418209/

Quoted from Gamespot:
Ubisoft Toronto's Current Development Pipeline:
  • New Assassin's Creed
  • Two new IP
  • New Splinter Cell game
  • Mystery game based on one of Ubisoft's "biggest" franchises

Necessary Jade Raymond Picture:

I have no sex appeal to market so I use the sex appeal of others.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 2 Is Comin' April 17
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/11/incredible-adventures-of-van-helsing-2-gets-a-release-date

The first was surprisingly good, so anybody who hasn't played it should go play it meow. Then play the sequel which I can only assume will be more Van Helsinger than the original.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Is Delayed Until 2015
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/11/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-release-date-delayed-to-2015

If you haven't killed yourself because of the headline, you can expect the game in February of next year. It'll be okay, they just want to make the game the best it can possibly be.

Xbox One Live's Core Services Were Limited This Week, Not TITANFALL's Fault
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/11/xbox-ones-live-core-services-limited-not-titanfalls-fault

Xbox Live had some issues this week, but don't worry, they made sure to inform us that it wasn't TITANFALL's fault... which was unnecessary because like your troubled child, nothing is ever really TITANFALL's fault.

Here's A Shocker, Flappy Bird Creator Considering Bringing The Game Back
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/11/flappy-bird-creator-considering-bringing-the-game-back

Dong Nguyen recently had an interview in Rolling Stone and he stated that he's considering bringing the game back, but with a precaution that people should take a break from it. Personally I don't see the appeal because the game is ass, and he didn't say that it's coming back for sure by any means... but I wonder what is making him consider it? Hmm..

Don't Have Enough MMOs? The Wildstar Release Date Leaked
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/11/wildstar-release-date-leaked

The MMO is a growing genre that up until recently had no popularity whatsoever, so it's nice to see Wildstar coming out pretty soon to finally breathe some life into this dying genre. It comes out on June 3.

Yakuza Forced Ubisoft To Reveal Watch Dogs At E3
http://www.destructoid.com/ubisoft-forced-watch-dogs-e3-reveal-minimum-pc-specs-defined-271858.phtml

Okay, so I'm just kidding about the Yakuza thing. In reality Ubisoft forced the Watch Dogs reveal at E3 that year where it erupted and completely consumed the gaming world. New consoles what? We have Watch Dogs.

The specs were also revealed, so, there's that too. The specs are in the link above. What? You thought that I was going to show them? What do you think this is?

Fine:
IntelCore 2 Quad Q8400 2.66Ghz or AMDPhenom II X4 940 3.0Ghz, 6GB RAM, 1024 VRAM DirectX 11 Shader 5.0 SCard: DirectX9 25 GB.

Don't say that I don't love you.

Speaking of Watch Dogs...
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/watch-dogs-beta-download-found-on-xbox-one/1100-6418231/

It's also possible that there will be a beta before the final release.

The Last Of Us Movie To Re-Tell The Story of The Game
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/another-reason-why-the-last-of-us-movie-is-sounding-good/1100-6418282/

Really, it's a funny concept when you think about it -- a video game adaption in movie format that tells the story of the game. So strange.

To those who haven't played The Last of Us, here's a basic rundown of the story: Two people try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world run by infected. Never been done in the movies before... should be good!

SHOTS FIRED!!! 2 Sony Vs Microsoft Again
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-fires-off-another-shot-at-xbox-policies/1100-6418280/

Adam Boyes took a shot at Microsoft over their policies for ID@Xbox which basically limits independent developers in the sense that every game they release must be released on the Xbox One at the same time as any other console, so no timed exclusives.

Adam Boyes figured that was stinky so he released this image on Twitter, the place where everyone goes to feud:
Um... pwned? Do people say pwned anymore? Well I do.

Will this be the Biggie vs Pac of this decade? Time will tell.

Sony Talks The Last Guardian
http://www.destructoid.com/sony-i-love-that-people-are-still-interested-in-the-last-guardian-271839.phtml

Scott Rhode said, "You’re going to be very frustrated by this answer, but it is 100 percent the God’s honest truth, and that is that we want to make great games. And when we see that the public is so interested in a specific game, of course that drives us to want to complete that game. But it also drives us to want to make it great. We would not want to ship that game if we don’t think it’s great."

He said that the game is in the mix.

We've been waiting at least 73 years for this game.

And this is all we get?

Stallion83 Basically Becomes A God Among Gamers Who Love Unlocking Achievements
http://kotaku.com/watch-live-as-a-hero-gets-a-gamerscore-of-over-one-mill-1542821937/1542852654/+lukeplunkett

Though I'm not a guy who really gets caught up in that kind of thing, I have to give props to any gamer who accomplishes anything substantial within gaming. Congrats, comrade, for reaching a gamerscore of 1 million.

Never has this been more appropriate.

Masahiro Sakurai Doesn't Give A Shit About Your Console War
http://kotaku.com/smash-bros-creator-reviews-the-ps4-1542882797

Masahiro Sakurai has a badass name. He also created Kirby and Smash Bros. Guess what he also does? He likes the PS4, despite being a Nintendo guy... a concept that is immune to fanboys of any console.

Shovel Knight Is Delayed
http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/12/5502070/shovel-knight-delay

Shovel Knight is the game about Triple H (a little bit of humour for anybody who has ever paid attention to what the Internet Wrestling Community thinks) has been delayed by a few weeks in order to offer a better product. Whew, at least it's only a few weeks.

Never Fear, The Fun Box Is (T)Here... Er, In China
http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/12/5501608/china-getting-its-own-native-built-gaming-console-the-fun-box

So China has its own console coming out soon, and if you remember, the video game ban was lifted not too long ago. So um, yeah, The Fun Box. The Fun Box.

Does this mean China world domination in video games? Probably.

Wii U Is Outpacing PS4 In Japan
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/13/wii-u-sales-outpacing-playstation-4as-in-japan

So, you wouldn't believe it but the Wii U is actually outpacing the PS4. The Wii U sold more systems in its first three weeks than the PS4 has. Well, that's embarassing.

Hideo Kojima Wants To Make A Silent Hill
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/kojima-would-like-to-work-on-silent-hill-is-he-a-good-fit-for-the-series/1100-6418299/

Gamespot asks, is he a good fit? Are you nuts? Of course he is... he's Hideo Kojima.

So the news is that he wants to make a new Silent Hill, but also would be interested in a free-to-play adventure game even though it seems unlikely. He doesn't want to make puzzle or card games.

Hideo Also Wants Snake in New Super Smash Bros. But It's Probably Not Happening
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/14/kojima-open-to-snake-returning-in-super-smash-bros-for-wii-u

I loved Snake in Smash Bros. but it appears that he isn't going to be there this time around, despite Hideo asking really politely to have him put in. What a nice guy.

Hold Your Horses, A Second MMO Hits The Market In the Future
http://ca.ign.com/videos/2014/03/14/swordsman-announcement-trailer

Following the buzz of Wildstar and this new avenue to explore in PC gaming, there's a martial arts-inspired MMO titled Swordsman coming out. There's a video in the link above, and it looks like Jon Jones is finally going to fight Daniel Cormier.

I just hope that we don't get flooded with MMOs to the point that they become stale.

Playstation 4 Going Up In Price In Canada
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/14/playstation-4-prices-going-up-in-canada

On March 15th (holy crap that's today!), the PS4s are going up in price, same with the camera and Dual Shock 4. I would say go out and get one before it's too late, but if you're just finding this out today then it's too late, you've already been hit (Limp Bizkit - Head For The Barricade reference, since nobody actually listens to that garbage but me).

Canada is the greatest country on Earth. Obviously.

Now Onto Some Good News -- Crazy Taxi!
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-crazy-taxi-game-revealed-here-s-everything-we-know/1100-6418312/

Yay! New Crazy Taxi!

...For mobile.

In the link there is a rundown of everything they know so far but I've just become depressed because everything I hold dear gets sequels on phones. Hopefully it's good but, uh, forget it. Fuck this.

Josef Fares Thinks Very Highly Of His New Game
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/designer-of-acclaimed-brothers-says-next-project-is-something-that-hasn-t-been-done-before/1100-6418313/

So Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons seemed to really catch on, and now Fares says the next game will be something we haven't seen before.

Fares... I've been on the internet for over 10 years, there's nothing I haven't seen before.

No User-Generated Content For Infamous 3: Second Son
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-game-infamous-second-son-won-t-support-user-generated-content/1100-6418317/

So unlike Infamous 2, there wont' be user-generated content as part of Second Son. There won't be a demo either. Which means you're in the dark about as much as you can be with the internet connecting everybody at all times, infecting your brain until you can't take it anymore, to the point where you explode and start watching reruns of Heroes while you wonder how they could mess up something so great so bad.

Ahem.

I don't know where I was. So, moving on...

More Details About Hyper Light Drifter
http://www.destructoid.com/here-s-some-info-on-how-hyper-light-drifter-is-going-to-play-271956.phtml

The game is going to be hard but never unfair, with enemies being smart and the battles being more thoughtful. I don't even care, just give me the game right NOW! Inject it into me, it doesn't matter, I just want it.

Infamous Was Going To Be Animal Crossing With Superheroes
http://www.destructoid.com/infamous-started-as-an-animal-crossing-like-game-271958.phtml

This makes the whole "Villager is a psycho" meme even more terrifying.

In what is probably the funniest, strangest and most awesome news of the past week (and possibly my life), Infamous was going to be like Animal Crossing, but with you being a superhero. I am always down for Animal Crossing, and this sounds amazing. I want this instead of Second Son, not that I think Second Son will be bad.

New Steam Controller Prototype
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/here-s-the-latest-steam-controller-prototype/1100-6418327/

On the left is the new design.
I guess I close out the news this week with an image of the new design for the Valve Steam controller. Personally, I think it looks kind of stupid but I'm sure it'll be functional and fine. They're going to show it off next week at GDC so make sure to stay tuned.

Oh Wait, There's More! Let's Talk About Skype On Xbox One

Weekly News Round-Up, March 2 - 8: Twas The Week Before TITANFALL... Plus Other Things Happen In the Gaming World

Written By: Tyler

Twas the week before TITANFALL... which means that after next week I'll have significantly less news to report on! Or maybe I'm tired of talking about TITANFALL and just want it to come. Regardless, here is some of the news of the past week that interests me enough to make fun of it.

Speaking Of Which, Here's Some More TITANFALL Crap
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/leaked-titanfall-screenshots-show-ziplines-and-heavy-turrets-in-multiplayer-report/1100-6418054/

The internet did what the internet does and it leaked some screenshots of the wildly popular and hyped FPS. The screens allegedly show things like monsters, the Generations feature, and most amazingly ziplines so people can travel across the map on them. But don't they have jetpacks or something?

Season Pass For TITANFALL Is 25 Buckaroos
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/titanfall-season-pass-is-25-contains-3-packs/1100-6418133/

Give TITANFALL your money.

Before We Go Any Further, Let's Talk South Park

The South Park RPG has been delayed too long, and all I can say is that it was finally released this week so while you can expect a review for it at some point on here, just go pick it up. Now. Stop reading this garbage and go do something useful with your life.

Mass Effect Trilogy May Show Up On PS4 and Xbone
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-and-ps4-versions-of-mass-effect-trilogy-discussed-at-bioware/1100-6418055/

Like the title says, it's very possible that Mass Effect is going to show up on the next-gen consoles, which is great except for the fact that unless they release ME3 with the modified ending we're going to have to listen to the internet bitch about the ending all over again.

Why Does Nintendo Want To Improve Your Quality Of Life?
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-explains-why-it-wants-to-improve-your-quality-of-life/1100-6418059/

Because they're nice people. They believe in individuality and giving products that people of all ages can enjoy. Novel concept.

Plus, if people die then Nintendo won't make any money, because Lord (Vader) knows that the Wii U isn't doing it for them.

They also said that video game hardware is still their core focus. Cue Nintendo-hater complaing in 3, 2, 1...

Oculus Rift Is Not Going To Be A "Rich Person's Toy"(Damn You IGN For Stealing My Headline!)
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/oculus-rift-will-be-affordable-says-creator/1100-6418068/

No, because society is a rich person's toy. Oh snap!

They're looking at a $300 dollar price tag for the thing, and that seems reasonable. Especially when you run a successful video game blog.

Fez Is Coming To PS4, Will Run At 1080p And 60fps
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/indie-hit-fez-comes-to-ps4-march-25-runs-in-1080p-60fps/1100-6418067/

And not a moment to soon because if Fish doesn't make more money he may just kill himself. He didn't say this, I'm just scared for him.

I'm also happy that it's going to be in 1080p because Fez is the type of game that will really put into perspective just how important it is.

Left: Before 1080p. Right: After 1080p.

Like Super Smash Bros. But Own An Xbox One And Not A Wii U?
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/don-t-expect-a-smash-bros-style-fighting-game-from-microsoft-for-xbox-one/1100-6418061/

Phil Spencer enjoys the popular Nintendo brawler, but says that Smash Bros. only works because Nintendo has a ballin' cast of characters. Those are my words, but that's what he meant anyway. So that's bad news for anybody who was holding out hope that Microsoft would pull a Sony and rip off Smash Bros. too.

If You Think The Ouya Is Ass But Still Want To Play Some Ouya Games, Then Read Below
http://www.destructoid.com/soon-you-won-t-need-an-ouya-to-play-ouya-games-271393.phtml

Apparently the marketing strategy for the Ouya is to offer the Ouya games on other platforms as well. Solid work guys. And I'm leaving it at that because I was either extremely sarcastic or giving them praise... since I know jack-shiz about marketing and finance, I feel this is the best option.

If You're One Of The Few People That Love Marvel Heroes, Moon Knight Has Joined The Fight
http://www.destructoid.com/marvel-heroes-update-2-31-brings-moon-knight-271369.phtml

I actually enjoy Marvel Heroes. I like playing as my favourite Marvel characters, I like that it's a hack n'slash RPG. It's not without flaws, but it's nice to know that they keep adding stuff to it.

Zynga Releasing More Games
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/03/new-farmville-words-with-friends-coming-to-mobile-devices

There are three to be exact... Farmville 2: Country Escape, New Zynga Poker and New Words With Friends. Great, now I can get even more game requests on Facebook. If I had as many friends as I do game requests then I'd actually be popular on Facebook.

Goat Simulator (Part 2)
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/04/goat-simulator-release-date-revealed

If you remember, though I don't know why you would, I posted the trailer for Goat Simulator something like two weeks ago. I was super high on it, because it looks silly and fun, and now... we have a release date: April 1.

It doesn't matter how often I see this gif, it is always awesome.

Batman: Arkham Knight Is Confirmed For October 14, 2014 (That's This Year!)
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/04/the-new-batman-game-is-batman-arkham-knight

As you can see, there is a new Batman game, and this time it is a direct sequel to Arkham City. A new Batman game this year?

Let's go for three...

Square Enix Lets 27 People Go
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/thief-dev-cuts-27-jobs-one-week-after-release/1100-6418106/

Wait, what?

They said that unfortunately it's something that major studios have to do sometimes. It sucks because it was only a week after Thief came out.

Start Playing Project Spark This Week
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ambitious-xbox-one-game-builder-project-spark-hits-open-beta-today/1100-6418095/

The game builder Project Spark for Xbox One hit open beta this week. In it you can create your own games or movies, and it does seem quite awesome. I love having to create my own games to play! Thanks!

Battlefield 4 Still Has Issues, More Updates Coming
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/dice-details-the-netcode-issues-disrupting-battlefield-4-promises-more-updates/1100-6418087/

Move along, I'm tired of talking about it.

Fine, fine, fine... I'll do it because I love you. Yes, you. You are the only person who reads this.

Apparently some people are receiving the reward of instant death (via being catapulted through the air) when they are trying to spring. DICE knows this, so they're going to try to fix it.

Microsoft Trying To Get Realistic Up In Herrrr
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-could-get-photorealistic-rendering-system-for-amazing-visuals/1100-6418060/

Phil Spencer says that internal testing for photorealistic lighting effects is currently underway, further blurring the lines between reality and video games. My reality is video games so this doesn't change anything for me anyway.

Aw...

Nintendo Won't Bring Mario To iPhone Because Of The Controls
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-on-why-bringing-mario-to-iphones-is-problematic/1100-6418105/

Thank Nintendo. Kensuke Tanabe stated that it would be a "really, really difficult task." Translation since he's foreign: touch-screen controls suck ass. You're welcome, please give me a job?

Amy Hennig, Writer On Uncharted 4, Has "Left" Naughty Dog
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/uncharted-ps4-writer-leaves-naughty-dog/1100-6418113/

Amy Hennig has left the series that she has worked on for years, and according to the reports she was forced out. I sense something naughty happening in Naughty Dog. Oh, that was bad, I'm sorry.

Update: Now they're saying that she wasn't forced out. Who do I believe? How will I handle this? How do I go on?

Remember DirectX? Microsoft Does
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-will-unveil-directx-12-later-this-month-at-gdc-hints-at-pc-tablet-phone-and-console-support/1100-6418137/

It looks like an update for DirectX is coming... the first since 2008. Supposedly DirectX 12 will be revealed at GDC, but who knows with Microsoft really.

85p Microtransaction? Get Killzone: Shadow Fall
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-pricing-blunder-lets-customers-buy-killzone-shadow-fall-for-85p/1100-6418136/

In the UK there was a blunder (can't imagine that... I'm just playing UK) this week where if you spend 85p, you get an entire game. That entire game is Killzone: Shadow Fall, the launch title FPS that I adore.

The sad thing is, there are so few players playing that game -- because they were dumb enough to release the game in the middle of Call Of Money and Battlebroke 4 -- that even with this mistake there's still probably only 2000 people playing at any given time.

There has gotta be players out there somewhere.

Speaking Of KZ, MAPS! FREE!
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-exclusive-killzone-shadow-fall-gets-free-multiplayer-maps/1100-6418134/

So this week they released two free maps, so you know, if you're one of the few people who have the game -- and coincidentally have good taste -- then download that shiz. Also, the Insurgent DLC will be available soon which sounds pretty awesome: new class with new abilities and new guns are the selling points for me but there are other smaller things as well. Pumped to try a new class.

Killzone, you have no idea how bad it gets... I wish I knew how to quit you.

The Return Of...

EA Says No More PS3, Xbox 360 Price Drops
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-says-don-t-expect-an-xbox-360-or-ps3-price-drop-any-time-soon/1100-6418135/

Thanks EA for apparently having your nose in everybody's business.

They Also Say That Free-To-Play Is Great
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-says-don-t-expect-an-xbox-360-or-ps3-price-drop-any-time-soon/1100-6418135/

Yeah because that worked out really well for Plants vs Zombies 2 and Dungeon Keeper.

Battlefield 4's Rocky Launch Didn't Hurt Shit, Okay?
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-battlefield-s-rocky-launch-did-not-damage-the-franchise/1100-6418131/

EA stated that fans have been "very responsive" and that the brand hasn't been hurt. No, because pissing off your fan base by releasing a broken game that people can't play doesn't hurt anything.

Oh who am I kidding? I can make fun all I want but people are such silly little creatures that they'll still flock to Battlefield 5.

They Clone Flappy Bird More Than Big Boss
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/report-new-flappy-bird-clone-hits-app-store-every-24-minutes/1100-6418126/

Every 24 minutes a Flappy Bird clone hits the app store. At first I thought it was 24 hours but 24 minutes? Oh sweet jesus, we're all doomed.

A Couple Screenshots For The Division Showed Up
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/05/new-the-division-screens-show-rooftops-and-ui

In case you were unaware of what The Division is... it is awesome in disc format. The game looks so mind blowing that I am dead now. It is so awe-inspiring that it is the new Pandora (from Avatar) and people will kill themselves because they can't be the game in real life.

Or it'll be a flop because it has so much hype.

Either way, they released some new screenshots and here's one:

EA CEO Thinking About Virtual Reality, Not Necessarily Oculus Rift
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-ceo-thinking-about-virtual-reality-experiences-but-not-necessarily-for-the-oculus-rift/1100-6418183/

Like the title says, the EA CEO is pondering some virtual reality ideas, but doesn't know if the maker of the Oculus Rift will be a partner. People love when EA doesn't use an established platform (if you can call Oculus Rift that at this point) and instead does their own thing.

Thank you EA for your time. Now, moving on...

Zeno Clash Developer Is Bringing Old School Back With A 2D Side-Scrolling Fighter
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/06/zeno-clash-dev-to-release-a-side-scrolling-fighting-title

Abyss Odyssey is the name, and they're promising that due to the fact that levels are procedurally generated that no playthrough will be the same. I love Zeno Clash but feel that fighting belongs in a different genre, so sign me up anyway.

I just hope that the story is as easy to understand as Zeno Clash is.

Child Of Light Has Co-Op, And Uh, You Can Be A Ball of Light
http://www.destructoid.com/apparently-child-of-light-has-co-op-watch-this-beautiful-trailer-271519.phtml

From what I can gather, one player controls the main character and the other person helps by controlling a ball of light. It... let's be honest, it doesn't seem like much. I'm looking forward to playing the game, a lot, but I don't think I'll be doing co-op because I can't see me or my brother exactly fighting over who gets to be the stupid ball of light.

The trailer is in the link above... your body is not ready.

I Can't Believe I'm About To Say This
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/03/06/call-of-duty-ghosts-dlc-to-include-the-kraken

I can't believe I'm about to praise Call of Duty but the DLC coming up has a 100-foot alien and that's pretty cool. So, uh, well played, mmkay?

By the way, it'll be available April 3 on Xbox 360 and Xbone.

The Last Of Us Movie Is A-Go
http://www.destructoid.com/start-your-dream-casting-they-re-making-a-last-of-us-movie-271570.phtml

It looks like the movie for The Last of Us is getting made, and just like the article says, start your dream casting now.

Cue Ellen Page remarks.

DID YOU KNOW THAT SHE'S GAY TOO?

Watch Dogs May Be Delayed (Again) For The Wii U, But...
http://www.destructoid.com/watch-dogs-will-be-late-on-wii-u-to-make-full-use-of-the-platform--271565.phtml

Once again proving why Ubisoft are cool, they are concentrating on making use of the Gamepad, which would mean that Watch Dogs is the first game to do that. Burn!

Yes, it sucks that Wii U will see it later, but at least this excuse seems genuine and understandable.

Okay who am I kidding? It's not understandable for anybody who wants to play this game and only owns a Wii U.

You can pick up Watch Dogs for any system that it's on (sorry retro gamers) on May 27. That's of this year! Holy crap!

Here's Something You Probably Didn't Think You'd Ever Hear/See -- Shaq Fu Sequel
http://www.destructoid.com/crowdfunding-campaign-starts-for-shaq-fu-sequel-271557.phtml

Further proving that in this day and age you can crowdfund everything, they are trying to make a sequel to the terrible 1994 game Shaq Fu. That game as so bad that 9 year old me hated it. 9 year old me didn't hate anything besides pizza (in which I've come around, thankfully).

So what does this all mean? I'm pullin' a George Carlin on Voting here, if you pay for this, you have no right to complain. And you should be ashamed of yourself.

But I'm kind of curious about it. Dammit, that's how they get you.

Jack Tretton Is Not the SCEA CEO Anymore
http://www.destructoid.com/scea-ceo-jack-tretton-is-leaving-at-the-end-of-this-month-271573.phtml

I'm just going to leave this here, we will miss you Jack:

A replacement was already announced, but if he doesn't lay the smack down Rock-style on something then I don't really care.

You Won't Be Banned For Playing TITANFALL Early
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/titanfall-won-t-ban-you-for-playing-early-on-xbox-one-or-pc/1100-6418163/

If you receive a legit copy of TITANFALL before it takes over the world next week, go ahead and play it! Respawn won't even ban you from playing the game that you bought with your own money... but be prepared to deal with interruption of services as they prep everything.

I feel like at this point DICE and EA should follow this train of thought and retcon the Battlefield 4 release. "No guys, Battlefield 4 is actually going to be released in April 2014 and you have all just gotten the game early so we won't ban you."

Watch Dogs Has An 8-Person Freeroam Online Mode
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/watch-dogs-has-8-player-online-freeroam-multiplayer-mode/1100-6418176/

There goes Ubisoft, just teasing people again and again. It's all we know, but I'm sure people are excited for this.

Microsoft Wants Political Ads All Over Xbox Live Dashboard
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-wants-targeted-political-ads-on-xbox-live-dashboard-courting-conservatives/1100-6418181/

Politicans can pay for ads on their service. That's pretty much all you need to know. I'm disgusted by this, because it's blatantly trying to plant empty political rhetoric into our brains as we play our games, and I would vote for me never vote for me do that vote for me in the voting booth where you vote.

I'll End This With TITANFALL, Because The World Changes Forever Next Week
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/titanfall-preload-now-live-on-pc/1100-6418174/

You can preload TITANFALL on PC right now... just download the 20gb file, and when it unpacks and installs it will be about 50gb. This isn't possible on Xbox One, so join the master race now.

Well that's it folks, another long week has gone by and we are all a little bit older and closer to death. Make sure to check back next Saturday for more of the same, or check back on the blog daily because you never know when an article is going to pop up.

Have fun and be safe.

The Game With The Lame Name -- A Bravely Default Review (Finally)

Written By: Tyler
Platform Played On: 3DS

Rating: 8.5/10
Verdict: Bravely Default is a wonderful RPG in a lot of ways, but there are some things later on that dampen the experience and keep it from being a masterpiece.

"Oh man, I can't wait to play Bravely Default... it's finally out!"

I turned on my 3DS and cleared off some space and started the download. After it was completed, I laid down on my bed and fired it up. "Oh, this is a pretty song on the main menu, I'm getting into this already. This feels like an RPG."

I press New Game, and I do all the things the game requires me to do to set it up. All of a sudden I'm looking at my room through the top screen on the 3DS -- a feature that has always existed on the 3DS but one that I haven't really seen used in-game before, but I only bought my 3DS last year and have mostly played RPGs on it anyway. A woman comes onto the screen (the screen that is still showing my room) and she's in a panic. She's screaming and rambling on about saving things, but I'm swinging the 3DS around following her as she walks around. All of a sudden the ground gives out and there's a giant hole in my room. This woman, Agnes, is now scratching and clawing for her life. I tilt the 3DS down and look at her as she is at my feet, her body dangling down into the hole. She falls.

"Wow, that was actually a really awesome beginning." From that moment I was hooked. It wasn't until later that it all tied in, and as of writing this review, I can fully appreciate what they were trying to accomplish there. Very cool stuff.

From there I play as Tiz, and while I wished I could change the names (I come from the old school of RPGs), it's not a big deal because at this point in gaming it's understandable, with voice acting and whatnot. I watch Tiz loses his family in the same way I just lost Agnes. "This game is dark," I say to myself, continuing on.

Once I become familiar with Tiz, and end up meeting Agnes again, I realize that at this point in time the story is nothing fantastic. I meet Ringabel, who doesn't remember who he is, and Edea, who was a villain but left the Eternian forces (Sky Knights) because she starting seeing things differently than them. Ringabel is a pervert. Edea is hardheaded. Bravely Default has been called a Final Fantasy by many reviewers, and I'm no different. It has all the trappings of a good Final Fantasy/JRPG, with its cutesy character models, perversion, Job System, and a story that involves crystals. I find out that Agnes is trying to reactivate all the crystals, and that's pretty much how the story goes for a long time, while I see how the characters grow and change towards each other.

Ringabel and Edea, in particular, are the most interesting to watch interact. There are legitimately some times where I laughed out loud and how they talked to each other. While Tiz and Agnes are more serious and predictable in where they will go, Ringabel and Edea keep the mood light and entertaining as often as they can.

A man modeled after my own heart.

As I walk through the different lands to each of the crystals, I am treated to a beautiful World Map song. It helps make walking feel like a real adventure, as any RPG should. As I hear more and more of what the OST has to offer, like the fantastic boss battle themes, or the music while I'm in my menu, I think to myself about how wonderful the soundtrack is from top to bottom. This is another reason why Bravely Default can favorably be compared to a Final Fantasy because at its best, Final Fantasy had amazing and awe-inspiring soundtracks. Bravely Default is no different.

I also am treated by the gorgeous visuals. The art and visual design on this game is on point, with every location feeling distinct and different, and beautiful rendered. It truly feels like a fantasy world, and allows me to get lost in it.

I am never forced to listen to the small talk between the characters, because the developers were smart enough to realize that a lot of people don't need to hear every single thing that a JRPG character has to say. Instead, I find it refreshing that "Party Chat" pops up on the screen and you press a button in order to access it. I always eavesdropped on the characters anyway, but it's a small feature that's appreciated.

As I progress, I keep myself busy with a few different things. Throughout the game I am reconstructing Norende, the town that Tiz is from that he saw get destroyed. When I am going to save the game, I can choose to update and the game will find villagers for my town. I can do this once a day, and when I do, I get optional monsters sent to me along with the villagers. I am the boss now, and I choose where to place my villagers. I realize it's smart to just focus the villagers on one thing at a time, because it can take hours upon hours to complete one task, especially later on. I get rewarded for my fine managerial efforts in various ways: I can buy more powerful weapons and armor, sometimes I get gifts in the forms of items, or I can get abilities to add to my special attacks. It's a simple concept, but it is important to remember to constantly have construction going so you can get some of this cool stuff. After all, it's as easy as simply clicking what you want to focus on next and when they're done you'll get a message on the screen saying they've completed it. It takes no time at all and is a huge benefit.

But as I play with the complex Job system I am filled with the most joy. Like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 5, the main pitch for me is the existence of said Job system. Each Job can level to 14, but not only that, you can have a sub-Job and special abilities from whatever jobs you've unlocked stuff for. What this means is that there are a ton of ways to play the game. Do you for some reason want your Black Mage to also have the Martial Arts ability (a Monk ability)? Well you can. You can also select buffs from all over the spectrum, if you've put in the time to unlock them. The combinations are endless, and as I progress through the game I kept getting more and more jobs and kept re-thinking what I wanted to do.

I grind so I can level-up my jobs and see what they have to offer. I do this again and again and again, but it's never boring despite the repetitive nature. Every time I level up a job I get excited to see what I will gain. When I master a job, I jump to another job to see what it has to offer. It's an obsession for me at this point.

I do the side-quests because they aren't really side-quests at all. It becomes clear early on that in order to unlock at least half of the jobs of the game, you have to complete these side-quests. I think to myself, "Why wouldn't anybody do these? The main crutch of this game is the Job system." Some of these side-quests are long, but I knew what was coming so I anticipated it like a child on Christmas Eve.

As I travel through the world, activating the crystals and seeing the melodrama unfold, I never get bored of the battles because Bravely Default does some neat things with the JRPG formula. For one, they created "Braves" and "Defaults." I think having that as the title is dumb, but it makes sense because it is a main point of the game.

The game has Brave Points, and you can have up to 4 at any given time. When you start the battle you have 0, and when you do an action you lose one. You gain one each turn so what this means is you can always attack once per turn. That isn't anything new, but if you Default, you gain a BP and it's like defending in other RPGs so enemies do reduced damage that turn. There are abilities in this game that require BPs instead of MP, so the battles are a constant struggle between managing your BP and risk and reward. It's a refreshing take on a tried, tested and true system because theoretically you can demolish your enemies in one turn... which cuts down on the grind time. So does the fact that you can fast-forward through a battle at two different speeds. You also get rewarded at the end of the battle for winning in one turn, along with other things. The battle system is still turn-based but they tweaked it enough to make it interesting even today.

There is also the SP, which allows you to interrupt your enemies for another attack. You get more by leaving your game on Sleep or paying for more, but I never needed them. They're just a way to make things easier if you need help. "I don't need no stinkin' SP," I say to myself triumphantly, with the only time I used it being when I accidentally pressed the button on the screen.

The game also uses Street Pass effectively, but I live in a small town and I never get to fully experience Street Pass features. You can use it to acquire friends to summon, a feature that allows you to summon your friends for powerful attacks in battle, or you can just get more villagers for your town. I cry a little bit inside because I cannot experience Street Pass.

I'm having a blast playing this game, listening to the music, leveling up my various jobs, switching abilities around, watching Ringabel perv on every girl he sees... this is a JRPG I can get behind. "This is one of the better RPGs I've played in the last ten years," I say to myself.

Then I get to, I believe, Chapter 5 and the game goes terribly, terribly wrong in some ways but awesome in others. A smorgasbord of blue exclamation marks -- which represent side-quests -- shows up on my touch screen. "Wow! There's a lot of content thrown at me," I exclaim so loud that my entire neighbourhood hears (okay it wasn't really like that). I eagerly travel to the nearest side-quest, and it turns out I get to fight a boss from earlier in the game again. It is important to note that from this point on, there are spoilers. I don't intend to give specifics unless I include spoiler tags, but depending on how sensitive you are to this sort of thing, you should proceed with caution.

I go towards another side-quest and again I fight a boss I've previously defeated. Something is different though, and I am intrigued by how the conversation between myself and the bosses have changed. It turns out every side-quest is like this.

I stop enjoying doing the side-quests because I've already done this. I don't care if they're harder, but I do appreciate that the encounters between my team and the bosses have altered in little ways. I can get behind that, but it's a sin to make a player replay sections. With that said, they are technically optional and they give you a lot of Job points and experience. It's still a crappy time.

However, with this, the story has kicked up a notch.

I can get behind where the plot goes, and I do, because I start truly loving the story, even if it took a lot of hours to get to this point. I'm just glad it happened.

"But I hate doing this," I say to myself, because I feel like they mishandled the situation. Bravely Default sends me to re-activate the crystals, so now I'm running through dungeons I've already run through enough, beating bosses I've already beaten, and this just puts a damper on the entire experience. I stop enjoying the game play. I try to justify it by thinking about how it makes sense from a storyline perspective, but I can't forgive it. "How dare you take a dump on my Bravely Default experience, Bravely Default!"

In order to get the true ending, you have to do the crystal thing again and again. Which means you beat a boss and then mangle your finger pressing X repeatedly (an idea I actually enjoy because it makes you feel the stress and pain that Agnes does, just like Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4). I respect the immersion much like I did in the opening scene in the game. Rinse, repeat, yawn. I start playing Bravely Default less and it takes me longer to complete than it should.

Finally, I trudge through it and complete the game. It's a satisfying conclusion and there is a plot twist thrown in there. The normal ending is decent but not amazing, and the true ending is significantly better. I lay on my bed and think about what I've just played, and what I'm going to write about it. "What am I going to score it?" It's something I struggle with because when Bravely Default is on, it's on like Donkey Kong.

"But after Chapter 5 is kind of ass," I say to myself. I decide on 8.5 because even though the story does get better and less generic, the developers have committed a cardinal sin. It is because of this that Bravely Default only gets an 8.5, but I strongly recommend it regardless.
